Emilio & Mila: The Sourpuss Twins

149 comments:

I found it interesting that Tory Burch wasn't all over Mila's clothes, being that they were the most Tory Burchlike of the lot, though the colors were not her style.

You guys hit it on the head though. She made toddler clothes for the little girl.

And Emilio's little girl dress reminded me of the dresses those little girls wear at the ranch where all the polygamists live.

How do you take adorable children and thin beautiful models and make them look so bad??

Have you had your coffees yet, dearhearts? Why so grouchy?

Grouchy perhaps, but totally on point.

Amazing how out of touch some of the designers were. OK, so maybe single people don't have occasion to hang out with children much, but it's not as if kids are sent off at birth to be raised by robots in a Siberian camp until the age of eighteen and then returned to society ready for their debut in a Girls Gone Wild video. They're kind of everywhere.

I want more crackity crack cranky from you.

Wow, I love you guys when you're cranky!! And thank you for the timing of this post: it made today's late-morning break from dissertation writing so much more entertaining!

I think you're being a bit too hard on these two: they're flawed and a bit boring, but Emilio's mama-dress is hot and the mini-mama dress is only offensive because of it's boringness; I don't like the realized looks that Mila sent down, but I DO like how she managed to make them go together even though the colors are so different. They have the same spirit.

I still think Emilio's adult look looked like it belonged to a flight attendant on the Barbie dream jet. All she needed was a flight attendant hat to go with it to complete the look.

I wouldn't have minded Mila's so much if the fit and construction were better. I agree that her little girl dress reads much younger than for a 6-8 year old, but it's still cute. There's just something off about the grown-up jacket -- boxy can be terrific but this on is just not.

Emilio just missed the mark last week. Can you imagine how hideous it would have been with the black lace & button plackets?!

I liked Mila's at the time, but damn you and your screen caps, they don't look too hot all of a sudden. She did at least attempt "whimsy".

Emilio was a bottom three for me. I didn't mind Amy's "refugee from the Miami Dolphin's orphanage" look nearly as much as I HATED that cliched mess he made for that poor child. The Amish dress with more style.

I do appreciate that Emilio will use a hemline that is below Heidi level, but what stylish woman under 50 is wearing this dress?

Emilio's efforts look like something designed for The Sims to wear.

damn that "it's" in my comment!!

oh lord, but wouldn't it be great if they WERE?!

I'm not cranky, and I liked Mila's.

I'm not cranky, and I liked Mila's.

Couldn't agree with you more on both of these, TLo. You go ahead and be cranky!

I hated Mila's Flinstones look for the girl... but i hated Emilios mini look even more that I think he should have been in the bottom three. There was no design there!!!

I actually like Mila's outfits, especially the little girl's. It struck me as retro and fun, what can I say?

Emilio's, though, is generic and, when coupled with his spouting off about how little girls are supposed to look like little girls, almost offensive in its extreme conservatism. Retro like Mila's, but in a bad way.

I'd seen people call Emilio's child's dress a First Communion dress; but to me this dress looks like it is for a 1 to 2 year old (in "style"). It looks far too young for a Communion dress.

Mila's girl's dress looked too simple to not have been made perfectly.

I know this is the wrong place - but I don't recall seeing that black/white printer fabric they showed Jesse getting at Mood?

Honestly, Emilio's outfit for the little girl looks like a dress for a Christian first Communion. Maybe that's why I hate it so much: I had to wear a similar dress when I was around 8 years old and that's really NOT something you want to wear at that age, specially because everyone keeps telling you to be still and quiet so that you don't stain it.
Hated Emilio's entry, I really did.

As for Mila's... meh.

mila's girl dress looks like a clown outfit, circa Gymboree in the early 90s. not good. not good at all. and that mom jacket was HUGE. it made cerrie look like she was wearing a tent.

emilio's girl dress is straight out of strasburg children. it's great for two-year-old girls growing up in the south, home of smocking and more smocking. and i live in the south. i know how it goes here. although my daughter never wore smocking. but it is VERY common for the uppity folks here.

absolutely loathed Emilio's child's dress - it looked so cliche as to be beyond belief on a fashion runway. I could go to any number of low-end stores and find this dress in some form/fashion. And I had to wonder - where was this pink on the momma's dress last week when they were (allegedly) doing spring fashion?

Mila's look had two strikes against it. The first, as you boys nailed completely, was that this was a toddler dress. The second was that the momma dress looked like a maternity outfit from the sixties. Seriously, couldn't you see Betty Draper in that?

srq

When i saw Emilio's on the runway (the first time i saw it actually, I missed the entire episode up to the runway), i turned to my room mate and said "wow, he managed to make an 8 year old look pregnant."

printeD fabric

Yes, yes, yes, but would we all be rolling on the floor laughing "WTFetyFF is THAT!?" if not for the obnoxious smack talking? Emilio has been falling into that trap for the last few shows- running his mouth as if he's bringing it... Are the producers setting him up? Or just giving him enough rope to hang himself?

Now see, my 3 year old would like Emilio's, if it were in HER SIZE, not 3 sizes too big. Seriously, now. But no, I sure as hell wouldn't pay $50 for it, or really, $50 in fabric means $200 on the rack. So no, big fail. I can get the cheaper version for $15 at Penney's after Easter.

As for Mila- NAIL ON THE HEAD!

I hated how passive aggressive Emilio was to Seth Aaron (according to the edits anyway)... "I just like traditional kids clothing.... pretty and sweet" [sic], ie: "I think yours are fugly and mine is precious, celebrating what true little girls are!" Gag me with a stick.

At least he knew he had fucked himself when the 'twist' came in... still, how thick is he to think that such a bland kid's outfit would get him anywhere??

I like to pretend crazy-face doesn't exist....

ASK:
Jesse used a print to line the girl's jacket, is that the one you mean?

I AGREE! Thank you for helping get my bitch-out! Emilio needs to focus on execution the back of the "mommie" dress was unexceptable especially from someone who is always blathering on about how great a tailor he is...the "little mommie" dress was pretty in a Easter Sunday Heartstrings (http://www.hartstrings.com/) kinda' way.

Miss Color Block Mila is beginnig to bore me and I wonder how long Ms. Garcia is going to put up with it...

bwaa! I love you guys.

Emilio's dress for the kid was just so...eh, I knew I was going to hate it as soon as I saw his fabric. My 4 mo old has cooler dresses than that. Hell, my po' Southern ass had cooler dresses than that. In the 70s.

So, on Friday my husband gets a catalog in the mail full of stuff a la Emilio's kid dress. Like karmic evil for making fun of Emilio's boring dress.

As for Mila, thank you to whomever spiked her beverages with pharmaceuticals.

It's Monday, cranky is a requirement! But seriously these two entries were awful.

The main thing that annoyed me about Emilio's little girl's dress was that it didn't fit. It's like when your mom bought you something a bit to large because you'd grow into it and get a few months more wear out of it.

And the color looked like a fabric that had been washed on hot and dried too many times so that it faded.

In defense of old fashioned children's clothing, my mother-in-law smocks christening gowns and dresses and what not and I have to say I generally find them cute. Regular dresses she'll smock with the little girl's favorite Disney princess or animal on the front and they LOVE them. I find it better that they're continually pointing to the princess on their dress rather than the princess on their underwear. But none of these girls have been over four and my MIL isn't in a design competition.

bitchybitchybitchy

Emilio's little girl dress was a very lame effort, and it wasn't well-fitted.

I think he escaped the bottom three because his second look was well done-not the best execution, since Emilio has done better in that department, but this is one of the consequences of bunim/murray's infatuation with one day challenges.

Mila was definitely presented in a more positive light in this episode, including her own comment about her lover for color blocking.
At this point, though, she'd better show something other than that to the judges or she's going to bore them to the point of getting auf'd.

You guys nailed it pretty well. I didn't have your level of hate for the outfits, but I was pretty disappointed. Emilio's mom dress was nice. Hate that particular color pink, although I wore it A LOT in the late 80s. Agreed on the poorly constructed back. And the little girl dress would be okay for a girl that age, but she was SWIMMING in it.

I thought Emilio and Mila were jokingly giving each other shit. And I thought Emilio talking about "traditional" clothes for little girls meant that he was hiding his insecurities at having no idea what modern little girls like. therefore, he had to go to what he knew, which is an old-fashioned cliche. But, there is a market for fancy traditional clothing, that's for sure. People pay good money for things that look "heirloom" so they can save them for their grandchildren and so on.

how emilio didn't end up in the bottom, especially over amy's entry, is beyond me. one of the criteria for the challenge was that both oufits, especially the kid's, had to be fashion foward, and emilio's were neither, whereas amys (no matter how ugly you thought they were) were very fashion foward. emilio's kid dress looked like an infant's oversized christening dress and the mom's reminded me of a bad 80's bridesmaid dress. GROSS. time for him to go.

whoops...*wasn't* swimming in it

I thought you grouped these two together because they BOTH dressed their children as toddlers.

Emilio's dress is quite commonly seen on the 5 and under crowd - and I don't dislike it - but in the 6-10 age range there's usually more shape to that pretty-spring-dress for church and grandma's anniversary party.

I think the biggest sin of Emilio's is just that (I may be wrong) it's not going to get an 8 year old excited to wear it.

And, sue me, I *liked* his mommy dress, though it was terribly made.

You were dead on about Mila's toddler outfit, but I liked the idea of her mommy clothes. As executed, and in that color combination, not so much.

Cranky or not you guys are absolutely right. Emilio should be ashamed of himself for putting that out there and how did he not wind up in the bottom?

TooFatforFashion

Emilio-Honey-There wasn't one fashion forward thing on either look-that putrid pink, those sick puff sleeves, the puckers. These two looks would only fit in where the Easter Bunny resides.

I watched this episode with my 8 year old and she liked Mila's kid dress, but I think it was more the color combo than anything. She did say she thought the polka dots were "babyish".

About Emilo's dress she said "Ugh! That looks like the kind of dress Great Aunt With No Children would buy me! Then you'd make me wear it when she came to visit and it'd be all itchy!"

Interestingly enough, her 3 favorites were Seth, Jay and Amy.

"Mila's look had two strikes against it. [stuff cut] . . The second was that the momma dress looked like a maternity outfit from the sixties."

``````````````````````
See, that was the vibe I liked about it. I could almost picture the fur toque(?) that the 60's mom would be wearing with it.
Hated everything, except the Roland Mouret knock-off.
In Mila's defense, I'm sure that the Romulan High Command insists that Romulan children are just miniature adults, so you cannot blame her that she does not understand distinctions that humans make between toddlers and eight-year-olds.
I haven't seen the episode yet, but was Mila's supposed to evoke 101 Dalmatians? Because that is all I can think of when I see those outfits together.
Very god caps.
I've liked lots of Mila's stuff (loved that coat), but this I totally hated. The mom outfit is blah, like half-cooked. And the childs... aagh! I hate that asymetrical color blocking, that zebra print, those leggings... everything really. I hate children dress in bright fluour colors like they are cartoon characters. And you're right, if it wasn't because if there's one thing I hate more than children dress in fluor colors is babies dress in fluor colors, this would totally be a toddler outfit.
She was right to go for color blocking, because being her "signature" it is very suitable for a child's look. But she could have done something like one million times more subtle within that premise. Very bad.
I don't like Emilio's stuff at all. Not even that first dress. I'm really not into the kind of thing he does. Here I kind of get where he's coming from. I'm Spanish and believe it or not, in some places children do dress like this. Well, almost. Because even in the world of the tradional little girl's dres, there's evolution. You find that kind of treatment in brands across Spain and Italy, and wealthy latins but into them big time. Only that the hemds have gone up, Emilio. And the fit is now tighter. And listen, you don't dress any girl above the age of 3 in baby-pink. It's not how's done, it's not comment-il-faut. You dress her maybe in fucsia, or in print, or indeed, in school-gray with red trim, but not in baby pink. Ditto those classic godet silky ribbons. They are for faldones. Just have a look at how Carolina Herrera Jr dresses the children she's had with her bullfighter husband in Madrid.
I don't know. The vibe I get about Emilio is that he so badly wants to fit his aesthetic with the Park Avenue Latin elite, but face with this challenge, he just didn't know how the kid of his client is supposed to dress, and he just went what he thought was the safe route, to something out of a Venezuelan telenovela from the 60s...
-Don
I'm with Ms. Flyover. I thought these were pretty good on TV, but now. . . not so much, as they say.
I think they came across better on TV because they looked pretty well made. But I hadn't thought about it, but Mila did indeed make a toddler outfit, and as FormerlyAnon points out, so did Emilio. In fact, Emilio's looks like a christening dress, doesn't it?
Still, I thought Emilio's were pretty good, if lacking any spark of originality (okay, he did do some nice detailing on the adult dress, but the back -- ouch!!). And I thought Mila's kid dress was very cute, but, yes, too, young, and I didn't realize how dull and unflattering the adult outfit was.
I can't believe Emilio wasn't in the bottom for the little girl's dress. It was way to big for her, looked more like a nightgown, and it wasn't even designed! Even Jeaneane or whatever put more thought into her designs.
Emilio's little girl dress reminds me of a larger version of a pink dress I wore as a baby (and my daughter wore - and still have for her daughter, should she have one). But as I said. BABY dress. For the 6-month set, not 6-year set.
And speaking of 6-month set, Mila's mom looks 6-months pregnant. I don't completely agree with you on the little girl look. If she's six, that's still pretty age appropriate. If she's older, then no. (Although yes, the neckline is whackadoodle.) But the leggings are cute.
Interesting article about Emilio here:
http://nymag.com/nymetro/news/trends/columns/cityside/6203/
I imagine emilio was close to the bottom. I think the mommy dress just saved him. Holly does look good despite the construciton flaws
Mila's was Mila. Overall I found it inoffensive and she kept her point of view
Personally I think Cerri did a good job on the runway and exuded the charm and joy you needed. This inspite of the fact she's not into kids. I'm glad she's still on the show
Frank
I'm kinda OK with Emilio's. The only thing I didn't like was that it looks so HUGE on her! And, yeah, the wonky back on mom.
But his model was one of the younger ones, and putting a more traditional style in a girlie color kinda worked for me. Though it wouldn't have if he'd had one of the 8 year olds.
Mila really is kinda nuts, huh? I was surprised to hear her little monologue about disembarking the crazy train.
Emilio's little girl dress could have been a cute little special occasion dress (birthday! wedding invitee, and not necessarily a flower girl!), because while on a day to day basis little girls may not be dressing like that they still do love dressing up, but it was just so... frumpy. How WRONG is that? An 8 year old girl looking frumpy? And she was such an adorable little girl too, look at her smile! It should be a punishable offense to make her look frumpy.
I don't mind Mila's mommy coat so much. I actually find it more flattering than her winning signature look coat, I found that hideously unflattering unlike most people. The rest, I agree on all counts. And I have had my coffee. Several cups, in fact.
Btw, I think for all his worries, Emilio was saved by the mom dress, that in the runway didn't show its faults so much (and Heidi actually said she loved it). If it had been only the child's dress, I don't see how he could have escape the bottom, given that the challenge was to produce a "fashionable" look, and under no description of the word "fashionable" does that fit, so the same reason that had him in the top last week, should have put him in the bottom this.
emilio (unlike mila) is very talented, i hope he's chosen as a final 3 or 4...that pink dress is kind of stunning
Emilio had better thank his lucky stars for the "twist." Bland, outdated, and about 4 sizes too big.
No coincidence, methinks, that the smack-talkers we wind up loving also back up their bon mots with real, challenge-winning skill. Tends to give you a bit more leeway in what you say.
Hard to believe Emilio was trashing the other designs and then sent sets of turn-of-the-century doll clothes down the runway.
As for Mila, that outfit would be perfect for Pebbles to wear on a Flintstones holiday special. Ew!
I cannot believe Emilio wasn't in the bottom. Upon taking another look at this, he is damn lucky BooBoo Kitty and Clown Fish were around. Unlike you, I hated the Mom outfit as well which to me screamed the softer side of Sears. I have no time for smack talk from deluded crap merchants.
You didn't like the Mom coat for Mila? I really liked it (you are right the pants are strange.) And I liked the little girl's dress as well. I didn't notice the jacked up collar at show time but otherwise I thought it was cute and age appropriate.
Last post I made with the URL for this article about Emilio cut off the URL. Let's see if this one works -- it's on two lines
nymag.com/nymetro/news/trends/
columns/cityside/6203/
milas adult outfit looked like a chef's outfit.
and the child's outfit looked like a two toned dyed dalmation.
I'm still interested to discover what Emilio did to cause Tim to dislike him so much.
Looking at workroom critique Tim is as professional as ever. He doesn't critisize the child's dress other than to say that there's no Emilio in there but - as we know - he won't give negative feedback past the point where a rethink is possible.
In the edit of the show as broadcast, however, he speaks to another designer (I forget whom, I'm afraid) and celebrates their innovation and dryly derides less forward thinking work - at which point we cut back to Emilio looking rather annoyed. This could've all been created in the editing room, of course, but perhaps this is the start of the great enmity of Season 7.
Has Tim does video blogs for the last two episodes?
MEOW! You guys really are in a mood today!
"Baby Carrie before she fell down the well" Hysterical!!! I had not thought of that in decades! Emilio's kiddie dress was OK. But as MK would say, it's clothes, not fashion. We've seen that little pale pink dress a million times. I am shocked that he would put that little thought into the challenge, unless this reflects how he thinks little girls shoulddress.
Sounds like SOMEONE (ahem) has a Fashion Week Hangover....
I thought Mila's little girl outfit looked like something Pebbles would have worn on The Flintstones. All that child needed was a bone in her hair.
I thought the precaps for next episode hinted at some of this. There's a glimpse of a conversation between Emilio and TimGunn which sounded quite "tense".
-D
Agreed on Emilio- you only get to talk smack if you aren't designing bridesmaid dresses from 1984.
I entirely agree with your grouchy selves, T Lo.
I hated Mila's little girl dress so much, I barely noticed how fug the mommy outfit was. Not only was everything unflattering, it was poorly constructed to boot. God, how I loathe those pockets. I would have put up a big stink if an aunt tried to put that on me as a kid. My mother would then have intervened, as there is no way she ever would have put something so horrid on a child of hers. Fail fail fail.
That Emilio was talking shit about Seth Aaron's awesome outfit while he cranked out this tired piece of J.C. Penney children's department sale rack crap made me hate him just a teeny tiny bit.
So agree with TLo. I didn't mind Emilio's Mom dress (although I hated the color), but it was very very much a Mouret/Posh Spice copy. Mila's was awful. Amateurish and unflattering. Enough w/ the color blocking already. Show us something else.
You guys need a vacation.
Mila at least embraced the spirit of the challenge. Yeah Emilio's mom had some execution issues but so did Jesse and nearly everyone else on every challenge. Could you do better with an outfit a day?
This blog isn't fun to read when it's so cynical. It seems like you want everyone to fail.
Yeah, you guys are cranky. My nine-year-old would wear the kid's outfit--it's very Mila, yes, but kids in the mid-kid range do wear bright stuff with appliques.
Emilio's--well, I gotta hand it to Holly, didn't realize how bad it was 'til I saw your screencaps. Kid's outfit looks like a nightgown.
mila made cerri look legit fat.
and she's a model.
design fail.
My almost 4 year old would LOVE that outfit, except for the wonky neckline.
While I didn't mind the jacket, it was a ~yawn~
Gahh! Emilio's baby girl dress was the worst thing from him this season, IMO.
And I must stick up for him. He doesn't smack talk ala Wendy or Jeffrey. There's no sniffing or turned up nose, like with Mila. Maybe a little bit this week, but it seems to me he's just answering questions.
It's my opinion that people are reading too much into his interviews and projecting what they think his attitudes are, rather than listening to the voice and watching his expressions.
I'm soooo over the damn color-blocking from Mila. Esp when it's not very interesting or well done.
LOVE it! when you guys are in a bad mood. Still laughing and about to make a mascara check!
Emilio's little girl dress was not only old fashioned, but it looked HUGE on that little girl!
Hmmm, I've been missing Emilo's smack talk, apparently.
Is Emilio channeling the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints? You know, that sect of whack jobs in Texas who were accused of massive child abuse, where all of the women members dress like extras from Little House on the Prairie?
And yea, I like Mila, but she phoned it in this week. Perhaps she's trying to play it safe after getting savaged for the 'arrow to the tootie' dress?
On the runway I hadn't noticed how poorly constructed Emilio's Mom dress was. But construction issues aside, I thought it was a very chic, really hot dress. Not a fan of the pink - he could have amped it up by choosing a brighter, perhaps fuchsia shade - but I think it's very flattering and sophisticated. And Heidi did make some very favorable comments about it on the models show. For once I agree with Heidi! The little girl's dress wasn't the least bit fashion forward but there is a market for dresses like this. If you ever go see the NYC Ballet perform The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center, you will see lots of little girls and their moms, dressed to the nines. Many of the little girls are wearing "princess" dresses not all that different from this one.
Mila's outfits looked like clown clothes.
I agree with everything everyone is saying about Emilio's, but it was the only one that my five-year old daughter (who admittedly has terrible taste) wanted to wear...
Thanks Anon 11:54 (& a later post with updated url) for the NY Magazine article on Emilio.
Either this is the first time you've been to this blog or you suddenly decided you don't like what this blog has been doing since day one.
Does anyone else out there think that Mila is to Christine Baranski as Sabrina is to Samantha?
I don't know about you, but for me, anything I can see Betty Draper wearing is an automatic IN. ;)
If I were a judge Mila would be out no question. She thinks she is one of the best when she is actually one of the worst left. Sad.
I liked Emilio's adult look. It lookis a little too small for the model, though. It would look a little less precious in black or dark pink. How about black with a pink belt.
The kid dress looks well made and classic. Not fashion forward. Maybe he could have used black velvet sash belt to tie it to the adult look.
Mila's adult look would be fab for a chef in an upscale trendy restaurant.
The kid look was very popular in the 90's for the 4-6x size range.
Emilio's outfits were adorable. That is the way little girls that age do dress in Latin America. Perfect ensemble for Easter. Or for a wedding. May not be the most innovative entry out there, but they were fine. Definitely safe.
Mila's were boring. Safe. A bit bland. But safe. No major complaints.
Honestly, I would wear both of Emilio's outfits joyfully. Mila's not so much- but they are simply not my style. They are wearable. They are sellable. They are safe.
I thought Emilio's outfits looked like Easter brunch. The little girl's dress was too big through the torso and absolutely not fashion forward, but I thought it was very nicely made. I thought the Momma dress was conservative but stylish - didn't notice the back until your screencaps. In any event, at least for For me these gave off the "going to church" vibe.
SO WITH YOU on Emilio. He totally pissed me off this week. So much so I kind of wanted to see him go for it. Show a little inspiration, would ya?
I am over Mila too.
Currently loving Jay and SA.
Mila's model looks like she's wearing 1950's maternity-wear. But her child model's outfit would have looked OK if it fit better and didn't have those pockets.
As for Emilio's, I feel sorry for the child model because, in that dress, she looks like she's destined for a polygamous cult. And the adult model's dress looks like has a mind of its own (a mind that is off its meds).
I liked Mila's this week
Tom and Lorenzo didn't get their Midol today. But yeah, agreed, Emilio's dresses were drab and sad. Mila's dresses looked like something you might sew in Home Ec with a Butterick pattern from 1973.
My issue with Mila's child's outfit was...I think my mom made that same dress for me, probably in those colors, when I was five. It looked like a Butterick pattern.
Siyah,
for 1963, yes! but for a runway in 2010, maybe not so much. I think that's the problem I had with Mila's look, just way, way too retro in that it could be a costume on Mad Men and not be out-of-step there. Not something that one would want to wear this year (especially after the other comments about how, um, large it makes the model look).
srq
I loved Emilio's little girl dress but only because it provoked your Carrie down the well comment. Priceless. His mommy dress was poorly made or poorly fitted or both. And his description was something along the lines of she looks like an expensively kept woman. Ewwwww.
I thought Mila's little girl look was okay. Maybe a little young for her model, but still okay. Her mommy look seemed best suited for a woman who was going to become a mommy again. I don't think she was going for a maternity look though so it's a big miss.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Emilio should have gone home! I can't believe he wasn't in the bottom 3. I have two little girls, and they would have both picked the losing design over this hideous dress ANY day. I understand what they didn't like about it, but the bottom line is that most little girls today would wear that outfit in a heart beat. Emilio's dress - NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS! As for the mommy dress, the back is worse than Bob Boo Kitty's mommy jacket.
Oh, right on. Emilio's kids dress was very Strasburg Children's wear. (which, to be fair, some very little girls and their tasteless mothers, like). http://www.strasburgchildren.com/
Mom's dress was slightly more interesting, but the whole thing said "boring easter outfits" to me.
Mila. What you said.
Emilio - I loved Emilio's mom dress on the runway and immediately thought it channeled Roland Mouret in a good way, but it does not hold up in the pictures due to the execution flaws. This is especially unforgivable because of the total NOTHINGNESS of the little girl dress. TLo's comment about the child dress: "this is disgraceful from a design point of view" is dead on. Absolutely DISGRACEFUL !!!!!!!!!
Mila - I really liked the little girl look and I liked the Mom look too, although it's a little frumpy. Overall it is not a wow, rather a solid middle of the pack entry.
As soon as I saw Mila's little girl dress, all I could think was "Pebbles Flintstone"
You forgot to add that both A-lines don't skim the body, but puff out around it.
Yeah clothes that make both a model and a tiny little girl look like they're hiding a fat ass and a gut.
What a good idea!
You can tell we have a super-nice group of contestants when Emilio is defined as smack-talking. Emilio barely said anything mildly critical (and you know the producers were striving to create some crazy critical stuff). And he was the first person to hug and congratulate Seth post-win.
I don't really feel any bitter kittenness or bitter superiority waves coming off of him -- which is needed for true smack-talking. He also realized and admitted his goose was cooked when he was told to make a Mommy dress.
Tim convinced Emilio not to use buttons and lace -- and Emilio listens. Tim should also have told Jesse not to use the fake red buttons (similar look). I hated Jesse's because the buttons and red trim were so fake looking. (I like Jesse so no bitter kitten base to my comment about Jesse.)
what really bugged me about emilio was that he kept saying "i'm making a princess dress! i'm making a princess dress!" no you're not, honey. you're making a night gown. or if i want to be generous, a christening gown.
You said it. Cranky, too! Cheri
srq, yeah, you're right, I know. I'm much more vintage/retro in my tastes (as in I would wear all of Joan Holloway's wardrobe, head to toe, going out for drinks today), which is not what Project Runway is. Though my love for those styles are too strong, I guess, so I still say it would be an automatic in just on Betty Draper points, if it weren't pregnant Betty Draper points.
I want to say that Emilio's dress comes from a Latino upbringing, because I know when I was little, my mother dressed me in dresses similar to that (but prettier) all the fucking time, and I still see them being sold in shops in Colombia when I visit. (I wonder if Lorenzo had a similar response? I assume his mother didn't dress him up in pretty dresses for obvious reasons, though there's a baby picture of my granddad in a dress that looks a lot like Emilio's... oh, old school Latinoamerica...)
That said - that was when I was preschool age (this may be where Jay's comment about kids and clothes came from - it's not so much that kids become sophisticated then as that kids start being allowed to pick out their own clothing then - tacky though their choices may often be); and even when I was little, those little princess dresses were annoying - the bodices were always itchy, especially because mine were always embroidered AND smocked.
Which is my problem with Emilio's dress: if he was going to go super traditional, then it should have fit properly and the detailing should have been as over the top cute to fucking MELT MY OVARIES, like the dresses I see in Colombia. As it is, it looks like she's wearing hand-me-down church clothes. STEP IT UP, SOSA.
As for Mila, well, I couldn't believe the judges didn't call her out for her dress being as simple and boring as Janeane's. But I guess between clown fish pants and toilet-paper tornadoes, there was only room for one boring dress on the runway. Ah well.
And I'm still dying to know what happened to Maya's [decoy] collection. Are the producers fucking with us?
Oh, that was the "nido de abeja" (honeycomb). It's still done in Latinamerica and Spain. It was actually very practical because it'd stretch and the dress would last several seasons (and as many sisters and cousins) as you kept putting down the hemd.
But even in that context that dress is "wrong". The baby pink is wrong for that age group, the detailing is also more baby than girl, and the lenght and proportions are all wrong.
Oh how I want to give Emilio a
"SNAP OUTOVIT!" Cher smack.
Like I said, he seems to be an okay guy, but you really need to fall back when you're sending ass down the runway.
The fit (huge and baggy) of Emelio's child dress reminds me of a pleated skirt (wool plaid) that my mom made me when I was 7. It hit me well below the knees. It was early in the 60's and the skirt still had a very 50's vibe. So, styles got shorter and shorter for the next decade and I just kept wearing that wool skirt. The last time I wore it I was in 10th grade. It still fit in the waist and was a very stylish mini/kilt. God, I loved that skirt.
Long way round to saying maybe Emelio is really going for investment clothing and he intends for that little girl to still be wearing that dress 10 years from now.
Emilio: the little girl's dress looks like something a baby would get baptized in. Its not unbearably bad but not something a girl would actually want to wear. The mom's look is actually kinda pretty. A little ho hum i guess but still pretty IMO.
Mila: Honestly i kinda liked both of Mila's looks. The girls dress was cute with the bright color blocking. The mom's design did make her look bigger but the coat was still pretty.
Idk, i've had my cup of coffee and have been well feed so i guess im feeling a little more generous.
Emelio's attitude is so snarky, I now like him less and less. His girls dress was so old school birthday party- and by old school I think I mean the 50s.
His Mommy dress was Meh!
He needs to zip it.
Mila has a POV, but it is getting pretty darn predictable!
Love you guys,
Zinnia
The shape of Mila's dresses remind me of lampshades...but this isn't an Ethan Allen design challenge...whoops.
Emilio made some Easter Sunday frou frou, Mila's "style" has long since worked my nerves.
Random thought... I actually think that if Emilio would have done his mom dress for the Heidi / Marie Claire cover challenge, and assuming that it would have been executed properly, he would have had a decent chance at winning that challenge.
raisin mountaineer
sosume. I liked Mila's. Yes. I can see that it's a little young for the kid. But the mom outfit at least would fit on a mom. I had a trapeze coat in the early 80's that was totally my go-to work outfit (I thought of it as my "lab coat" although I worked in an office).
I don't see anything wrong with her having color blocking as a "signature" as long as she can make things that express that in a variety of ways, which she has.
Emilio on the other hand, well, I'm with the fundamentalist LDS crowd (um, well, I'm not really, I just live in that part of the country so I see that look a lot...). I can see that the grown-up dress COULD be pretty, in a different color, better executed, non-puffy sleeves. But as it is it is matronly and drab.
And gee, I like have liked Emilio in general. Step it up, sir!
WTF? I MUST have not been watching the same episode, while I agree Emilio and a great deal of the others were kind of boring this week, his work on this show has not been bad. And I agree with the only sane commenters on this thread who simply do not see this "evil Snarky Emilio" that some of you speak. Methinks its a way to justify the 'tude that folks say Tim Gunn has been displaying towards Emilio and to justify getting rid of yet another POC with a clear point of view--I have yet to see what attitude Emilio supposedly has---in this episode he started off the show talking about playing it safe. He later commented how insecure he felt about his proffering. Some people just look for reasons to dislike others--and we Know this.
Emilio's girl dress was cliche like whoa, which is kinda funny given his comments in the ep. The adult dress was a bit boring, although I will say I like the colour.
However, when it comes to Mila, I disagree a lot on the kid's outfit; it's colourful and fun and appealing. I do agree it's on the young end but I don't think it's out of the question for a kindergartner (and in fact the only kid whose opinion I could get is that age and loved it), which is where their low end was for this challenge, though for the older girls it's probably too young. The adult outfit is, granted, more of the same from Mila-land, and rather simple, although I don't dislike it as much as you do, being more or less neutral on it.
You got that right about the blocking by Mila but I was surprised how bad the proportions were emphasized this time.
Her children's design could have been infuenced by Pebbles Flinstone, Emilio's more Little House on the Prairie. Either way, boring.
With most of the designers, even ther reliable who just didn't get it together, I just don't understand one thing: what's the problem with thinking about children's clothing? I just don't understand their being all lost on this one.
Emilio's child's look was a poorly fitted toddler's Easter dress. By that age, girl's dresses are generally fitted in the body.
NONE of these "designers" can put in a damned zipper! What the heck?
That is a Sewing 101 skill. Step up, "designers", and learn your basics.
Mila's little girl outfit... yabba dabba don't.
haven't read all of the comments so forgive me if I'm repeating a point already made...but in both cases Tim more then encouraged these designs & choices! HE out and out praised Mila's little girl dress. ht say ye TLo of Tim's (arguable) contribution to this outcome?
Amen, boys! Mila just bothers me...I mean, can we challenge ourselves just a little? That pink thing looked like a puckered mess, as well. I thought the judges were all about taking risks and using refreshing color?! Geez.
I am so glad you hated the flintstones dress as much as I did, omg, just stop already. As for the I think little girls should be princesses, hun, who cares what you think, also S.A's punk princess rocked so much harder.
I have to disagree on Emilio's dress. I thought it looked classy and stylish, and the color and silhouette looked great on holly. The other three looks are bland and generally inoffensive.
I LOVE those pants.
I actually liked, though didn't love, both of Mila's outfits. Though I agree that the pants do the "mom" model no favours, and that the fit of the girl's dress could be better.
But at least Mila's were better than Emilio's. I thought for his girl's dress alone that he should have been in the bottom three instead of Jonathan. Just because some people still wear it, doesn't mean it's at all fashionable. Just that some people decide to dress their kids in some sort of 1950 Mormon thing. And I found the mother's dress to be not just boring, but not great fitting. Which is a bad combination.
Plus I didn't like Emilio's comments about how he wants girls to look like 'real little girls,' and then put her in that piece of boring, ill-fitting, old-fashioned, compound dress. On top of that, he commented that his "mom" model looked like a "well kept mother," like a trophy wife. Nice.
ASK:
Jesse used a print to line the girl's jacket, is that the one you mean?
no that was a bolder print.
I think when they went to Mood the second time they showed him excited to find a white fabric with a black print kind of a toille or damask pattern.
i'm not dorothy gale
Well of COURSE you're cranky, darlings! Dealing with eff-ups in both technology and fashion challenges is daunting any day of the week but even more so on Monday.
I hated the pink outfit; it was too reminiscent of mommy-and-me outfits from the 1950s (I have photos). If fashion goes retro it should have some kind of ironic edge and these were just...sad.
Couldn't figure out why I didn't like Mila's child outfit, but you are absolutely right. It's for a toddler. Hated her shapeless mom coat.
I liked Emilio's mom dress better in the photos than I did on TV. The screen caps show some of the details I missed. But I agree the back was a disaster and he should have been called on it. And as others have correctly pointed out, nothing fashion forward about any of it.
Mila's child outfit looks inspired...by watermelon
Emilio - Ugly. I like princess dresses and I don't care for this. It has no detail, no design, nothing. Disgrace is right.
The mom's outfit is okay but wonky in construction and the color is too close to Pepto Bismol. Or those pink Canada mints. A pink print would have been nice - just something to break up the endless palette of baby pink.
Mila - I think if she went for a shorter trapeze jacket where the black band sat around the waist, the coat would have been much more flattering on Cerri and would have made the silhoutte a bit more modern and a little less maternity.
The kid's outfit you all covered. Pebbles, indeed. I like the colors, but the fabric is so stiff and the dalmations and dots are ugly. And those sad black patch pockets. No, no, no!
Mila needs to do something besides color blocking stat or La Nina will have her ass. I'm surprised we haven't heard anything yet about it.
Chiming in late, but I agree with TLo on all counts. Emilio's big girl dress was bland and poorly executed. His little girl's dress was dated and unflattering --- on a child. And that is a difficult feat to accomplish.
I'm pretty surprised that Mila has turned out to be so one note. I really thought she'd have more tricks in her bag, but these looks just pretty much said it all. I really truly cannot take much more of her colorblocking. I exprected her little girl's look to be fabulous, but instead she produced something that you would find in any Target or Walmart (and not from the special limited editions collections). I really think the next couple of weeks will prove to be very interesting with each challenge and elimination.
what the heck did blogspot do? Sudden;y they are sending replies to my gmail account, which is connected to my blackberry.Phone's been blowing up all day.
I can only ikmagine how frakked up things are for TLo.
Mini-mommy's dress looks as though Barney and the Flintstones created it in some sort of unholy union and then gave it to Cruella DeVille to detail. Hideous!!
My biggest complaint with Emilio's little girl dress was that it fit so badly. The poor thing was swimming in that dress! The "mom" dress, meh. I didn't mind Mila's so much, I thought they were both cute in a retro way. But looking at the still pictures, they could have been taken in a bit more so as to not resemble tents. The little girl's outfit might have been better with black leggings rather than polka-dot. XX's
Man, these were boring. Hate Milla's little girl outfit. It looked like it came from the Wal-Mart toddler department in 1990.
Didn't the judges praise Emilio's model dress? They're really liking that silhouette this season (like the dress we saw Heidi wearing last spring).
A couple of commenters have mentioned that Emilio's dress isn't appropriate for an 8 year old. His model was obviously much younger than 8. More like 5. It might have been appropriate for a 5 year old Easter Sunday dress had it fit properly. But the little girl was just swimming in it and it looked horrendous. I was really surprised he wasn't in the bottom 3. I thought both clown fish pants and toilet paper tornado were better.
Re: why Tim doesn't like Emilio. I haven't picked up on it from the show, but have from Tim's blog. I know in interviews Tim talked about a designer basically trying to throw him under the bus, and Heidi made some comment along the lines "I wish I had a red phone to Tim Gunn." Perhaps that designer was Emilio.
I can also buy about five commercial patterns for the outfit Mila made for that child. Easily. And they're all in toddler sizes! I can buy patterns for Emilio's little girl dress, too. It might've been better.... if it fit. It was too long and made for a bigger child. And waay too pale of a pink.
Tim loved Mila's whole idea and suggested she use the black/white for the mom. I guess Tim isn't always right. Oy!!!
Both of Emilio's were WTFety-F-F.
Hope you guys recover from crankity-cranks-ville.
Momica
fragile industries
I'm getting all the cranky pointed at Emilio. Little girl: poster child for prisoners of polygamous Mormon sect (of any age). It was a bottom 3 look, lazy and cheap. Mom looks like a tramp airline stewardess, circa 1986. Or what the men of that polygamous sect would think was hawt. A sad entry from someone who is quickly losing my respect.
Mila: Not so cranky. I'm torn. A lot of what she's done, I've appreciated as a single look, but she's a one-trick pony -- channelling the 60's and color blocking. This was a look I liked. Mom needs better leg treatments than that, and a waist, but I liked the retro feel of the jacket. The girl's dress may be toddler for hipper tweens these days, but I had a nearly identical trapeze/color blocked dress (patent leather where the animal print was on this) in 1967 from Joseph Magnin, at 8 years old, and it was the coolest thing in the hopscotch grid at the time. So I can't be neutral, I loved it.
Still, Mila's predictability is very limiting. I would buy from her line because it's my cuppa, but it's not a broad appeal.
I LOVED the episode where Carrie fell down the well. So good!
Emilio's wasn't so bad, well, except the little girl's outfit. As for Mila, color blocking and/or retro-looking all the times gets old real quickly.
On one-note Mila, I think she does have more tricks in her bag, but she's refusing to use them. She's sort of decided that color-blocking is going to get her to the end of this competition, or that that's her best bet of playing it safe... But in fact, her look for Episode 1, which was suppossed to "define" her as a designer is no color blocking, and it's more Marni than Courreges. And her 2nd look for the burlap challenge, was also not the color blocking. I loved both these looks, but somehow, after her win with that coat, she became one note.
-D
While watching I was thinking that Mila probably should have been sent home. Seeing these again convinces me I was right. It was just terrible on so many levels.
She's getting insanely diminishing returns on her color-blocking, and this time it was almost insulting, like she was saying "look what I can get away with!"
Thanks for pointing out that the kid's dress thing would have been cute on an actual baby/toddler. I hadn't thought of that. At least the look would look nice on SOMETHING.
Forgot to add that I hate Emilio's efforts this week too - I thought his kid's dress was maybe passable on TV, but the screencaps make me realize it's an abomination. His adult dress had some potential, but was a miss.
I really think bottom three should have been these two, and the one they sent home (never bothered to learn her name).
-2/23/10 7:26 PM again
Mila's kid's dress looked like Pebbles. And not in a cute way.
sheis dangerously bodering on one note. shurely they will call her out on it soon. this is why the judges should never change from week to week. guest judge never can make an accurate assesment overall.
