I hated Kenley initially. Now I ADORE her! Who else shrilly giggles and says to the judges "I think I nailed it. Do YOU?" She's not the designer Leanne is, but her personality is great on tv.
I agree, Meg. Girl likes to have fun, and that's fine by me (as long as I don't have to be trapped in a room w/her). I think either Joe or Kenley is going to win this week and this is going to cause the model shake-up next week, since 3 of the 6 designers at the finale show had different models (Leanne, Kenley and Joe). And the fact that Suede had none of the show's models in his runway show means - I hope, hope, hope – that Suede is getting auf'd tomorrow night. See yah, Suede!
Sorry, but if someone doesn't Bitch Slap Kenley on this episode, then they are all delusional. This looks like it is shaping up to be a real dressing down for someone. I just hope it's her. Or Suede.

i sorta like kenley.. she's got spunk, i have to say that for her. and at least she's not boring like some of these other ones. people with the bigger personalities may sometimes slightly offend people by mistake, and then add in editing to make "good tv," and a person can look like a bitch in a heartbeat. i think she's spunky, fun, and entertaining.

My older sister is/was a helicopter mom. And now that my niece is 30 and has only had one full time job that has lasted longer than 3 months (she has only had 2 full time jobs; professional student otherwise), my sister is seeing the error of her ways.
Regardless of the fact that she's still a stubborn clueless brat, I'm guessing that she pulls out the win this week.
I don't have a problem with Kenley's designs for the most part. I just think the way she defends herself is just shrill and immature. Tim Gunn hates her ass so we'll see how that plays out in the final judging (if she's part of the final 3)>

Kenley has talent and ability, and she's been given this amazing opportunity to go from Kmart and the contemptible WalMart to having top fashion industry people give her feedback. She could say, "I have a point of view I believe in, and with input from these professionals., I can refine it and make it even better." Instead, she listens to them when they like her work, and dismisses them when they don't. I suppose she thinks that's what being true to herself is about. Compare to Stella, who has such a very specific point of view and several years on Kenley (and who therefore might be expected to really dig in her heels); Stella decided to learn from and incorporate the feedback she got, understanding that it could help her develop as a designer and didn't mean losing her p.o.v.

When my daughter & I went to a summer orientation before she started college, it was amusing to watch the helicopter moms (and a few dads) complain that the university would not send the grades to them or give them access to their childs email or online accounts. When it was explained that the student was 18, therefore an adult able to sign contracts, etc., these parents went ballistic.
I worry about the state of our country in the future!
I dislike Kenley for the same reasons: she's way too stubborn and full of herself. With any career, you have to be ready to learn and grow. Kenley is not.

Just to clarify--a lot of the concern about excessive parental attention are that it leads to adults who are *unable* to be self-confident or fight for themselves, because they were overly protected from life's challenges and disappontments.
Kenley strikes me as a real scrapper--and though I agree that she is delusional, I think she has been reacting to the positive reinforcement for this behavior during the PR process--Diane Von Furstenberg said flat out "She fought for her dress, and I like that". I think at this point in the competition Kenley believes that she can fight her way out of the bottom by convincing the judges she has a POV--and so far it has worked well for her.
Everytime Kenley opens her mouth these days, all I hear is blah blah blah waaaah! And it's a shame because I like her as much as I hate her. (I'm a complex girl; don't shoot me.) Even when it sounds like she might be getting a compliment in the previews, you hear her talking over the judges. Is it nervousness or is it just that she's the most important person in the room, or so she thinks?

I wouldn't put her in the same league as Korto & LeeAnn. She doesn't come close & her taste in fabrics is horrific (it's no surprise to find out there's KMart in her background).
But she likely does deserve to be in BP this season, but that is only because this season featured such a weak field of designers.
This season, design-wise, (meaning all personalities aside), it is really just LeeAnn & Korto. Everyone else is just an extra.

Well, maybe I miss spoke. My niece is what you described above. My sister took over for her in everything because she either a. didn't do it right, b. didn't do it fast enough, and c. because my sister didn't want her to face the same 'disappointments' that she did, d. she just couldn't let go.

After all the BP hoopla, I was thinking what a lovely season it's been here on PRG without any designer-pimping trolls to bother us, but it looks like we're having a minor infestation today. For the record, I think Kenley is an immature spoiled brat who has learned a lot of cutesy-pie tricks ("I think it's great, don't youuuuuu?") that have probably worked well within her family and limited social circle, but out here in the real world, she is not fooling anyone. I cannot wait for her to get her comeuppance.

At my last job, several co-workers wrote the college essays and then the papers for the owners children. These children had company credit cards that they racked up thousands of dollars on monthly. Often we would be in meetings and the "children" would call and the meeting would wait while Mom discussed did you get my check and how is so and so. I am all about being accessible in a crisis, but it is ridiculous to be that available for whinny hinny brats. She also accessed their facebook pages and monitored everyone else's children. I was often called to her office to be asked about something on my son's facebook page. Did you see? He is so funny! Three years later, he is on target to graduate next spring and her children will be adding at least one more year each. Big Big Mistake!!!

After Top Chef, I crave some excitement in the judging room and Kenley's providing it, so I am grateful to her for that. I respect Heidi, Michael and Nina, but their judging process sucks, although honestly the outcomes would probably be the same. Before they deign to TELL the designer what the designer was thinking, they should ask.
In a perfect world, the rebellion would be led by a more worthy warrior, but Kenley will do. I know that views vary, but I will take Kenley's tactics over Santino's any day.
Did anyone else read Chris March's piece in Elle on the BP show? He is routing for Korto, because her clothes are more than one note. I hope I paraphrased him accurately.

I used to feel the same way about Kelli. However, the more that I think about her, I have become a little nicer.
She started out as a strong competitor whose work did get progressively weaker, but okay enough to be passed through. The first team challenge came up before she could really redeem herself again. It would have been interesting to see what she could have accomplished with diminished competition.
Well Kenley has to win one soon to precipitate the model mixing that we see in the final collections. But I'm still not ready for it. She's so annoying and again with that braying laugh on the runway.

I think that with everything - there HAS to be a balance. Sometimes, my Dad was too critical. Sometimes, my mum was too coddling. But in the end - I had to grow up and face realities on my own. As much as they tried to protect me in whatever way they tried - in the end, it was up to me when I left home and went to the real world.
In any career or undertaking - it's NEVER easy to take criticism. Some of the time, the criticism is unhelpful and vindictive. But I agree with Daniel V - there is always SOME take away from any situation.
Yes - be true to yourself - but not to the point that you are SOOO introspected (I may have just made up that word....!!) that you can not hear any other POV other than ones that agree with you and tell you how fabulous you are.
My mummy always said: If I get to a point where I can not learn anymore from anyone or anything, then I have failed utterly.

Good points both. There is always a mix of influences in every family, and subtle distinctions between overprotection and over-control and the way kids react to their parents and other aspects of environment depends on hundreds of factors. That is why some friends of mine joked that they should start a "therapy fund" for their kids because they figured they would screw up one way or another and the kids would have to work it all out in therapy.
Interesting that we are all mixing the theme of the next challenge with our psychoanalysis of the designers.
What Dear Hubby & I tried to do with our daughter (now 23 & in grad school...we must have done something right) was to let her go out on her own, with 'suggestions' (actually orders to do something) on how to accomplish the task. We were there to help & back her up when, say, her math teacher just gave up on her. She requested help, got nowhere with the guy. So I called and had a 'come to Jesus' meeting, politely of course, and he have her the help she needed to pass the class. When she did fail at things (she is not very athleticaly inclined), I tried to convince her she could learn more from failure/defeat than she ever would from nonstop success.
I guess we have succeeded. She watches PR with me (we are over 350 miles apart) and goes on about how deluded Kenley is about her 'beautiful' work. lol!

We're ripping her for "not listening to the judges" which our own beloved Chris March did last year with human hair and nobody is turning that into a thesis on why he's evil incarnate. Is she a little young and immature? Yeah, she totally is. But she's also fun and self-confident. And comparing her to La Pepper is an insult to Terry who was so obviously vying for the role of Reality Show Villain.

That's what I tell my kids (poor bastards), but I'm not sure I believe it myself. When you see fucking paper bag puppets posted on the wall that the parents obviously made and then your kid feels bad because his robot puppet (that he made himself) doesn't look that good,it makes you want to puke.
It is nice for a change to see some comments here that are favorable to Kenley. The fact that someone choses to defend her doesn't make them the secret minion of this evil young princess. Kenley earned her way to the final show through a difficult and tiring work process. And I recall Korto saying on the show in a previous episode (in one of those confessional sequences) that if she was called out by the judges on one of her designs she wasn't going down without a fight. Fortunately for her it has never come down to that situation (at least since the inverted dart dress she made in the second episode where she collapsed in a puddle of tears.) Kenley, Korto and Leanne are clearly the best this season of the show had to offer; each one has her strengths and weaknesses. The judging hasn't been so terrible. There's no chance of a designer as bad as Chloe or Jeffrey winning the big prize. I'm just sorry Terri and Daniel didn't have the chance to show decoy collections instead of Suede and Joe.

EXACTLY. Maybe she was overindulged as a kid, because she comes off as childish. She giggles in glee over praise and stomps and pouts over criticism. A secure person does not behave that way.
I respect sticking to your guns and not compromising who you are. But there also needs to be emotional maturity in order to actually "listen" to Tim and the judges. At least listen and not knee jerk deflect any critique as a personal insult and unacceptable.
This is a character flaw that hopefully over time Kenley will evolve out of. She is beautiful, vibrant and talented, but also her own worst enemy. I can see her doing great work someday if she doesn't sabotage herself first.

But I have to say, Chris listened to TG, weighed the options, and then explained why he was going to do it anyway. Yes, it was a lame excuse (I just like it!), but he at least listened.
I don't hate Kenley. I find her very young and idealistic in a way. I just shake my head in frustration because she is wasting a prime opportunity to learn from her fellow contestants, Tim Gunn, and the judges. Its ok to defend your POV, but no one is ever too special to not learn.
Kenley was so sweet when Blayne was auf'ed last week and stepped up to the plate with Stella to help her twice in one episode. She has a heart. Maybe she's put too much armor over herself to protect herself and all that lead poisoning has gone to her brain.

I know. My only consolation was that when they got into middle/high school, Mom & Dad couldn't come to class and take the test for them. They had to pass algebra & biology & chemistry all by their little ol' lonesome...and most didn't.

This reminds me of my very first assignment in university. It was frickin hard! For the (once cocky) first year that I was =) That assignment put me in my place! SOOOO of course I ran to Dad! And tried to sweet talk him into doing the assignment for me basically =) Cuz I followed in his footsteps and studied for the same profession. Perfect plan right??!! NOPE. Good ol' Dad - he smiled, shook his head and said "Sorry Carol, you have to do it yourself. I'll be here to help if you have questions."
The best thing he ever did for me! I did it on my own. Took me DAYS. And I got full marks for it =) I still have it! hahahahahha He didn't just swoop in and bail me out. But he also didn't leave me high and dry. He was always there, dear old Dad =)
So. I hope Kenley has someone in her life who can say "Look - you have talent. That's clear. But when you get the chance to work with the likes of Tim Gunn and Michael Kors and Nina Garcia - shut the eff up and LISTEN. Their advice is priceless."

I honestly don't want to see her fail. Just like I didn't like to see Keith get smacked down. But they both had the same problem. So into themselves that they ignored everyone around them. Even the experts who have been doing it longer and better than they have. Sad to see.
I'm going to leave the whirlybird parenting discussion to others, and go straight to PR. I think Kenley wins and Suede is out based solely on the editing. My current theory is the first confessional shown is the person aufed and the second is the winner. So Suede is out and Kenley wins, which also explains the model switchups. Of all those left, Kenley is the only one who is dissatisfied with her model.
And speaking of Kenley, she has a lot of what my grandmother called gumption as well as ambition and drive. She is going to fight to get what she wants, and that's a plus in a cutthroat business like fashion. Unfortunately, what she doesn't have in abundance is talent. I thought her work was interesting at the beginning, the throwback to the 40's and 50's and her own personal style, but she's mining what turned out to be a very thin vein of coal, and it's running out. Her runway show proves that.

I'd add to that--- And she's playing to the cameras - all of that is for the benefit of the cameras, and she just doesn't realize how it looks. Some other designer who was auf'd said she talks and laughs to herself loudly in the workroom; I don't think that is to herself. It is to the cameras.
She's thinking she is going to look cute or funny or be a star or something. It's that pretty thing again. She seems to have that pretty sense of entitlement that doesn't allow her any reality checks.
If these are helicopter moms with their girls - you wonder if they will truly see themselves once they are put under the PR microscope, or heavens, come read the blogs.
All the karma-talk is a bit silly IMO. First, it suggests that the lovely Tim Gunn would use his position as judge to eek out revenge against the designers who didn't take his advice. Is he really that petty? And if he were, is that something to be looking forward to? Second, it suggests that if Kenley had listened to Tim that ... what exactly? That she would win? In the finale show contestants who listen to much to Tim and/or judges never win (see Santino). At the end of the day, the judges most admire those who maintain their own POV. How is that commiserate with "listening to Tim"?
It looks like Jerell is wearing a wreath of olive leaves in his hair, as an homage to the original Olympics. At least he's not naked, as the original Olympians would have been.
I think that the challenge is to design dresses for daughters to wear to job interviews, (perhaps teachers?) as per Leanne's comment about designing sexy dresses for teachers(although that might have been sarcasm.) Obviously, the mothers are there to dictate what they think is appropriate for a job interview, which will probably contradict what the daughters think. (Many young people nowadays are absolutely clueless about dressing for an interview. I always thought that you should dress one level "better" than the job to which you aspired.) So Jerell's crack about Kenley only being able to design a dress from the 50's may inadvertently predict her win, because a well-made retro dress could look stylish and appropriate for a field where modest dress is valued.
Well, Kenley may be a bitch, but with boobs like that she'll always get by. Did she really laugh at another designer on the runway? If it's Leanne, I may burst a bloodvessel screaming at my TV tomorrow.
If it was my little boy with the robot puppet, I would have said to him loud enough for the others to hear, "as far as I'm concerned yours is the best, because the others CHEATED".
No, I don't think Tim will Auf Kenley just cuz she didn't listen to him. But I think that the way she dismissed his advice will come back to bite her in the ass cuz he will remember that the next time she tries to defend her design as the best on the runway.
He'll remember that she doesn't take any criticism well and so her arguements may come off as bratty rather than professional and a strong POV. Plus the way she conducts herself on the runway is sometimes, pretty poor.
And no, not all designers who listened to Tim ended up winning it all. But the ones who did take on some of his criticisms, went a long way. The ones who flat out rejected his insights - got Auf'd. That's my personal insight anyways.
Just to clarify--a lot of the concern about excessive parental attention are that it leads to adults who are *unable* to be self-confident or fight for themselves, because they were overly protected from life's challenges and disappontments.
As someone who has had to deal with interns with helicopter parents, I think it leads to the opposite in many ways. They're totally self-confident (aka arrogant) and entitled because their parents have blocked them from life's challenges and disappointments. They think they're super talented because their parents defend them from even constructive criticism.
On Kenley, I do find her extremely irritating. But she does have talent. Maybe not as much as she thinks she does. There's a fine line between self-confidence and defensiveness. She's very defensive.
Ah, yes, Helicopter Moms. I know a bunch of them since I have an 18 year old son. They were all freaking out on graduation day and dreading their kids moving off to college. I thought that was rather selfish, since they were making it about themselves, and not celebrating the accomplishments of their kids. Oh well, I was never one of those Moms who did the kids' reports, or projects. I'd help if asked, but it was up to him. I guess I'm a 'Bad Mommy' (just to make it remotely PR related).

I explained to him the difference between tracing, copying, and original illustration . And if you trace or copy and present that as your own work it is called plagiarism. I've seen a lot of mention of a "one note" and "POV"
What is the difference between being a one note and having a well defined POV? (Been wondering this since last season when they kept saying that Christian had a POV and all I kept seeing was a one note)
Is the only difference is that a POV means that someone likes what your are doing over and over, and a one-note means that they don't like what you are doing over and over.
I think there is a difference between being a 'scrapper' and having such poor dispositions that you are unwilling to listen to criticism from seasoned veterans. When she has done something well, they have acknowledged, have they not? Then why not accept, GRACIOUSLY, when they point out missteps?
I know I'm behind, but honestly Terri was never much of a designer. She only really succeeded at the drag queen one, and that wasn't really a drag queen outfit.
Terri is a TAILOR, and nothing else.
I think Jerrell is quite a nice designer, but needs to learn to rein himself in. He tries too much.

I've been on Team Kenley since episode 1. I can easily admit she's not without her faults, but I ADORE HER anyway. She makes for excellent television, and there's something I love at the heart of all her designs, even if they're sometimes over the top. I actually thought the megasleeves were the only real problem with her desigm this week. I happened to think her skirt was beautiful and would look fabulous with a simple top and a little less volume. In terms of it being avant-garde, though, she knew to push the envelope and the judges could respect that, even if the results were laughable.
Slightly Off-Topic: did anyone notice that Michael Kors didn't even mention Terri and her auf'ing in his blog from last week?
And also, he talked about how wearable Jerrell's was and how Blayne's wasn't. I thought one of the points of avant-garde was that it didn't have to be wearable. Clearly, nobody knew their ass from a hole in the ground last week, from the contestants to the judges.
Heidi does look great in the previews and that green dress is fab....and, interestingly...to answer a previous poster's question, the designer of that frock is....

Okay, but I can give you at least one example of a designer who didn't listen to Tim and who almost won the whole thing: Raimi. Don't get me wrong. I'm not recommending that the contestants ignore Tim. But, at the end of the day, one has to believe in one's own perspective and talent as a designer - if you don't, who else will? I also think, based on the Bryant Park collections, that Kenley DID make it to the finale. So perhaps she was right to stick to her guns after all...

Kenley has talent and ability, and she's been given this amazing opportunity to go from Kmart and the contemptible WalMart to having top fashion industry people give her feedback. She could say, "I have a point of view I believe in, and with input from these professionals., I can refine it and make it even better." Instead, she listens to them when they like her work, and dismisses them when they don't. I suppose she thinks that's what being true to herself is about. Compare to Stella, who has such a very specific point of view and several years on Kenley (and who therefore might be expected to really dig in her heels); Stella decided to learn from and incorporate the feedback she got, understanding that it could help her develop as a designer and didn't mean losing her p.o.v.

I worry about the state of our country in the future!

Kenley strikes me as a real scrapper--and though I agree that she is delusional, I think she has been reacting to the positive reinforcement for this behavior during the PR process--Diane Von Furstenberg said flat out "She fought for her dress, and I like that". I think at this point in the competition Kenley believes that she can fight her way out of the bottom by convincing the judges she has a POV--and so far it has worked well for her.

I wouldn't put her in the same league as Korto & LeeAnn. She doesn't come close & her taste in fabrics is horrific (it's no surprise to find out there's KMart in her background).
But she likely does deserve to be in BP this season, but that is only because this season featured such a weak field of designers.

Well, maybe I miss spoke. My niece is what you described above. My sister took over for her in everything because she either a. didn't do it right, b. didn't do it fast enough, and c. because my sister didn't want her to face the same 'disappointments' that she did, d. she just couldn't let go.
Kenley reminds me of the kids whose parents over compliment them on their achievements or fought with coaches, teacher, etc. over how 'perfect' their child is in everything they do. That can lead to delusions that everything they do is perfect, even if the experts don't think so.

After all the BP hoopla, I was thinking what a lovely season it's been here on PRG without any designer-pimping trolls to bother us, but it looks like we're having a minor infestation today. For the record, I think Kenley is an immature spoiled brat who has learned a lot of cutesy-pie tricks ("I think it's great, don't youuuuuu?") that have probably worked well within her family and limited social circle, but out here in the real world, she is not fooling anyone. I cannot wait for her to get her comeuppance.

At my last job, several co-workers wrote the college essays and then the papers for the owners children. These children had company credit cards that they racked up thousands of dollars on monthly. Often we would be in meetings and the "children" would call and the meeting would wait while Mom discussed did you get my check and how is so and so. I am all about being accessible in a crisis, but it is ridiculous to be that available for whinny hinny brats. She also accessed their facebook pages and monitored everyone else's children. I was often called to her office to be asked about something on my son's facebook page. Did you see? He is so funny! Three years later, he is on target to graduate next spring and her children will be adding at least one more year each. Big Big Mistake!!!

After Top Chef, I crave some excitement in the judging room and Kenley's providing it, so I am grateful to her for that. I respect Heidi, Michael and Nina, but their judging process sucks, although honestly the outcomes would probably be the same. Before they deign to TELL the designer what the designer was thinking, they should ask.
In a perfect world, the rebellion would be led by a more worthy warrior, but Kenley will do. I know that views vary, but I will take Kenley's tactics over Santino's any day.

I used to feel the same way about Kelli. However, the more that I think about her, I have become a little nicer.
She started out as a strong competitor whose work did get progressively weaker, but okay enough to be passed through. The first team challenge came up before she could really redeem herself again. It would have been interesting to see what she could have accomplished with diminished competition.

Well Kenley has to win one soon to precipitate the model mixing that we see in the final collections. But I'm still not ready for it. She's so annoying and again with that braying laugh on the runway.

I think/hope that Suede is out in this one. Wish they had gotten rid of him last episode and kept Terri.
Always interesting when they choose to work with real world clients and their real life sized bodies. But however bad it gets, it can't be as bad as how Jeffrey treated Angela's mother, that was AWKward.

I think that with everything - there HAS to be a balance. Sometimes, my Dad was too critical. Sometimes, my mum was too coddling. But in the end - I had to grow up and face realities on my own. As much as they tried to protect me in whatever way they tried - in the end, it was up to me when I left home and went to the real world.
In any career or undertaking - it's NEVER easy to take criticism. Some of the time, the criticism is unhelpful and vindictive. But I agree with Daniel V - there is always SOME take away from any situation.
Yes - be true to yourself - but not to the point that you are SOOO introspected (I may have just made up that word....!!) that you can not hear any other POV other than ones that agree with you and tell you how fabulous you are.
My mummy always said: If I get to a point where I can not learn anymore from anyone or anything, then I have failed utterly.
I think Kenley can be a successful designer. But she needs to listen. Truly LISTEN. Not talk over people constantly.

Good points both. There is always a mix of influences in every family, and subtle distinctions between overprotection and over-control and the way kids react to their parents and other aspects of environment depends on hundreds of factors. That is why some friends of mine joked that they should start a "therapy fund" for their kids because they figured they would screw up one way or another and the kids would have to work it all out in therapy.
Interesting that we are all mixing the theme of the next challenge with our psychoanalysis of the designers.

What Dear Hubby & I tried to do with our daughter (now 23 & in grad school...we must have done something right) was to let her go out on her own, with 'suggestions' (actually orders to do something) on how to accomplish the task. We were there to help & back her up when, say, her math teacher just gave up on her. She requested help, got nowhere with the guy. So I called and had a 'come to Jesus' meeting, politely of course, and he have her the help she needed to pass the class. When she did fail at things (she is not very athleticaly inclined), I tried to convince her she could learn more from failure/defeat than she ever would from nonstop success.
I guess we have succeeded. She watches PR with me (we are over 350 miles apart) and goes on about how deluded Kenley is about her 'beautiful' work. lol!

We're ripping her for "not listening to the judges" which our own beloved Chris March did last year with human hair and nobody is turning that into a thesis on why he's evil incarnate. Is she a little young and immature? Yeah, she totally is. But she's also fun and self-confident. And comparing her to La Pepper is an insult to Terry who was so obviously vying for the role of Reality Show Villain.

It is nice for a change to see some comments here that are favorable to Kenley. The fact that someone choses to defend her doesn't make them the secret minion of this evil young princess. Kenley earned her way to the final show through a difficult and tiring work process. And I recall Korto saying on the show in a previous episode (in one of those confessional sequences) that if she was called out by the judges on one of her designs she wasn't going down without a fight. Fortunately for her it has never come down to that situation (at least since the inverted dart dress she made in the second episode where she collapsed in a puddle of tears.) Kenley, Korto and Leanne are clearly the best this season of the show had to offer; each one has her strengths and weaknesses. The judging hasn't been so terrible. There's no chance of a designer as bad as Chloe or Jeffrey winning the big prize. I'm just sorry Terri and Daniel didn't have the chance to show decoy collections instead of Suede and Joe.

EXACTLY. Maybe she was overindulged as a kid, because she comes off as childish. She giggles in glee over praise and stomps and pouts over criticism. A secure person does not behave that way.
I respect sticking to your guns and not compromising who you are. But there also needs to be emotional maturity in order to actually "listen" to Tim and the judges. At least listen and not knee jerk deflect any critique as a personal insult and unacceptable.
This is a character flaw that hopefully over time Kenley will evolve out of. She is beautiful, vibrant and talented, but also her own worst enemy. I can see her doing great work someday if she doesn't sabotage herself first.

But I have to say, Chris listened to TG, weighed the options, and then explained why he was going to do it anyway. Yes, it was a lame excuse (I just like it!), but he at least listened.
I don't hate Kenley. I find her very young and idealistic in a way. I just shake my head in frustration because she is wasting a prime opportunity to learn from her fellow contestants, Tim Gunn, and the judges. Its ok to defend your POV, but no one is ever too special to not learn.

I know. My only consolation was that when they got into middle/high school, Mom & Dad couldn't come to class and take the test for them. They had to pass algebra & biology & chemistry all by their little ol' lonesome...and most didn't.
But that was when the very important life lesson came into play...Who said life was fair? Very lame, but true.

This reminds me of my very first assignment in university. It was frickin hard! For the (once cocky) first year that I was =) That assignment put me in my place! SOOOO of course I ran to Dad! And tried to sweet talk him into doing the assignment for me basically =) Cuz I followed in his footsteps and studied for the same profession. Perfect plan right??!! NOPE. Good ol' Dad - he smiled, shook his head and said "Sorry Carol, you have to do it yourself. I'll be here to help if you have questions."
The best thing he ever did for me! I did it on my own. Took me DAYS. And I got full marks for it =) I still have it! hahahahahha He didn't just swoop in and bail me out. But he also didn't leave me high and dry. He was always there, dear old Dad =)
So. I hope Kenley has someone in her life who can say "Look - you have talent. That's clear. But when you get the chance to work with the likes of Tim Gunn and Michael Kors and Nina Garcia - shut the eff up and LISTEN. Their advice is priceless."
OR - she can continue to ignore Tim in her insolence and....get Auf'd. Either way - she'll get some sort of exposure. But who's to say she'll learn anything??? Remains to be seen =)

I'm going to leave the whirlybird parenting discussion to others, and go straight to PR. I think Kenley wins and Suede is out based solely on the editing. My current theory is the first confessional shown is the person aufed and the second is the winner. So Suede is out and Kenley wins, which also explains the model switchups. Of all those left, Kenley is the only one who is dissatisfied with her model.
And speaking of Kenley, she has a lot of what my grandmother called gumption as well as ambition and drive. She is going to fight to get what she wants, and that's a plus in a cutthroat business like fashion. Unfortunately, what she doesn't have in abundance is talent. I thought her work was interesting at the beginning, the throwback to the 40's and 50's and her own personal style, but she's mining what turned out to be a very thin vein of coal, and it's running out. Her runway show proves that.

I'd add to that--- And she's playing to the cameras - all of that is for the benefit of the cameras, and she just doesn't realize how it looks. Some other designer who was auf'd said she talks and laughs to herself loudly in the workroom; I don't think that is to herself. It is to the cameras.
She's thinking she is going to look cute or funny or be a star or something. It's that pretty thing again. She seems to have that pretty sense of entitlement that doesn't allow her any reality checks.

Is he really that petty? And if he were, is that something to be looking forward to? Second, it suggests that if Kenley had listened to Tim that ... what exactly? That she would win? In the finale show contestants who listen to much to Tim and/or judges never win (see Santino). At the end of the day, the judges most admire those who maintain their own POV. How is that commiserate with "listening to Tim"?

It looks like Jerell is wearing a wreath of olive leaves in his hair, as an homage to the original Olympics. At least he's not naked, as the original Olympians would have been.
I think that the challenge is to design dresses for daughters to wear to job interviews, (perhaps teachers?) as per Leanne's comment about designing sexy dresses for teachers(although that might have been sarcasm.) Obviously, the mothers are there to dictate what they think is appropriate for a job interview, which will probably contradict what the daughters think. (Many young people nowadays are absolutely clueless about dressing for an interview. I always thought that you should dress one level "better" than the job to which you aspired.) So Jerell's crack about Kenley only being able to design a dress from the 50's may
inadvertently predict her win, because a well-made retro dress could look stylish and appropriate for a field where modest dress is valued.

No, I don't think Tim will Auf Kenley just cuz she didn't listen to him. But I think that the way she dismissed his advice will come back to bite her in the ass cuz he will remember that the next time she tries to defend her design as the best on the runway.
He'll remember that she doesn't take any criticism well and so her arguements may come off as bratty rather than professional and a strong POV. Plus the way she conducts herself on the runway is sometimes, pretty poor.
And no, not all designers who listened to Tim ended up winning it all. But the ones who did take on some of his criticisms, went a long way. The ones who flat out rejected his insights - got Auf'd. That's my personal insight anyways.

Just to clarify--a lot of the concern about excessive parental attention are that it leads to adults who are *unable* to be self-confident or fight for themselves, because they were overly protected from life's challenges and disappontments.
As someone who has had to deal with interns with helicopter parents, I think it leads to the opposite in many ways. They're totally self-confident (aka arrogant) and entitled because their parents have blocked them from life's challenges and disappointments. They think they're super talented because their parents defend them from even constructive criticism.
On Kenley, I do find her extremely irritating. But she does have talent. Maybe not as much as she thinks she does. There's a fine line between self-confidence and defensiveness. She's very defensive.

I thought that was rather selfish, since they were making it about themselves, and not celebrating the accomplishments of their kids. Oh well, I was never one of those Moms who did the kids' reports, or projects. I'd help if asked, but it was up to him. I guess I'm a 'Bad Mommy' (just to make it remotely PR related).

I explained to him the difference between tracing, copying, and original illustration . And if you trace or copy and present that as your own work it is called plagiarism. I don't even know if there is a word for when the parents trace somebody elses work and turn it in as the the kids.

Excellent post! I especially like the part about Tim vengence. Now Heidi is another story and Kenley is due for the mother of all smackdowns from Heidi, and I will enjoy it when it comes, but I hope it doesn't come too soon.

Please tell Sewing Siren Jr. that I believe that is the BEST Tin Woodman I have ever seen. And while the other parents have probably thrown their children’s creations out in the trash bin, his/hers is the only one in the bunch that was WORTHY of keeping. I've seen a lot of mention of a "one note" and "POV"
What is the difference between being a one note and having a well defined POV? (Been wondering this since last season when they kept saying that Christian had a POV and all I kept seeing was a one note)
Is the only difference is that a POV means that someone likes what your are doing over and over, and a one-note means that they don't like what you are doing over and over.

I know I'm behind, but honestly Terri was never much of a designer. She only really succeeded at the drag queen one, and that wasn't really a drag queen outfit.
Terri is a TAILOR, and nothing else.
I think Jerrell is quite a nice designer, but needs to learn to rein himself in. He tries too much.

I've been on Team Kenley since episode 1. I can easily admit she's not without her faults, but I ADORE HER anyway. She makes for excellent television, and there's something I love at the heart of all her designs, even if they're sometimes over the top. I actually thought the megasleeves were the only real problem with her desigm this week. I happened to think her skirt was beautiful and would look fabulous with a simple top and a little less volume. In terms of it being avant-garde, though, she knew to push the envelope and the judges could respect that, even if the results were laughable.

I can't hate Kenley. She's got that hipster doofus thing going on, but she's not utterly talentless (lookin' at you Suede. time to act one's age, pal). She needs a High Fashion Ass Whoopin' as they like to say on ANTM, and some time. She'll have a great deal of success in her area, she'll grow when the 40s retro look has passed, but she'll not likely be a Big Name Designer.

Okay, but I can give you at least one example of a designer who didn't listen to Tim and who almost won the whole thing: Raimi. Don't get me wrong. I'm not recommending that the contestants ignore Tim. But, at the end of the day, one has to believe in one's own perspective and talent as a designer - if you don't, who else will?
I also think, based on the Bryant Park collections, that Kenley DID make it to the finale. So perhaps she was right to stick to her guns after all...

How come Kenley ened up on PR instead of on Design Star (or whatever it's called) for which she also auditioned?
